Joey grew up in southwestern Virginia and started playing trumpet at the age of 12. He received his BS and MS in mechanical and aerospace engineering from the University of Virginia, where he studied classical trumpet with Paul Neebe. While in Virginia, he played with the Roanoke Youth Symphony, the Charlottesville Symphony Orchestra, the Waynesboro Symphony Orchestra and many other university music organizations.
After graduating, he left Virginia to join an engineering rotation program in the defense industry. The rotation program moved him through southern California, San Jose, Colorado Springs, and then back to settle permanently in San Jose. During his nomadic years in the defense industry, he played with the University of Redlands Wind Ensemble, the Silicon Valley Symphony, the Canon Winds (New Horizons Bands), and the Little London Winds. Currently, he can be found playing regularly with the South Bay Philharmonic and the Sons of Jubal Big Band.
